Obsolete Circuit Breakers

March 24th, 2010 Comments off

The word obsolete, when used in the context of circuit breakers, is not used in the pejorative sense but rather, in this case, obsolete simply means no longer produced.

Take a Square D QE3200VH molded case circuit breaker, considered an obsolete circuit breaker. This is a 3-phase 200 amp breaker with a very high current interrupting capability still used widely in industry today. It can be found in many types of metering stacks. The Square D EHB34100 is another in a family of obsolete circuit breakers still in wide use today. These two examples represent an enduring part of breaker history forming a strong and ongoing niche in the used breaker market.

Besides saving up to 70% of the cost of a new breaker when buying used, it may be the only good choice you have. Only the used electrical equipment market supplies replacement breakers for breakers in use but which are out of production. Panel board lineups are designed for specific types of breakers. It would not be feasible to replace a defective breaker in a lineup with a different type or style of breaker other than what the panelboard was originally designed to use.

Used circuit breakers should come with a warranty. In most cases you can expect a one year warranty on used circuit breakers, the same time offered by manufacturers of new breakers.  Always confirm the warranty.

Do obsolete circuit breakers meet the same national testing standards as new equipment? The answer is yes, if the used circuit breakers come from reputable suppliers that properly service and test the circuit breakers before shipment.

General Electric Circuit Breakers

MIDWEST carries General Electric Circuit Breakers. Whether it’s a new, reconditioned, or used breaker, we are sure we can provide just the breaker you need. We stock thousands of General Electric circuit breakers in our inventory.

MIDWEST reconditions General Electric circuit breakers. Worn or damaged breaker component parts are tested and replaced if necessary as part of our quality control program. Over current devices can be retrofitted with electronic devices to assure state of the art over current protection. A low voltage air circuit breaker is disassembled. Insulating and current carrying members are cleaned and inspected and replaced if necessary. The breaker is reassembled and then put through a rigorous testing procedure to make sure everything properly checks out. The breaker would be tested for contact resistance, insulation resistance, and the over current devices would be tested to ensure they operate in accordance with the manufacturer’s trip curve specifications. Typical basic overcurrent functions would be long time, short time, and instantaneous pick up and trip capabilities. Some breakers contain ground fault capability as well.

Breakers

March 5th, 2010 Comments off

Breakers, an integral component to any electrical circuit, come in many types and sizes. Two common categories are the air circuit breakers, and molded case circuit breakers. Air circuit breakers are comprised of a metal frame which serves as the breaker structure. Attached to the metal frame are the various breaker current carrying and insulation components.

Molded case circuit breakers are comprised of a dielectric compound which acts as an insulation member for the current carrying components of the breaker. The dielectric compound also acts as the frame support for the breaker.

Air breakers are typically larger breakers capable of carrying more current. One advantage of molded case breakers is their lower purchase price. The breakers you find in a home electrical panel are small molded case breakers. Molded case circuit breakers can also be larger current carrying types as well. Today’s molded case breakers can go all the way up to 4000 frame amps.

Cutler Hammer Circuit Breaker

March 3rd, 2010 Comments off

Cutler Hammer, a venerable name in breakers, bought out the Westinghouse distribution and controls business unit in 1994. This acquisition included the Westinghouse circuit breaker division. MIDWEST carries many types of Cutler Hammer/Westinghouse breakers. A popular Cutler Hammer breaker is the KDC3250 thermal magnetic breaker. Thermal magnetic refers to the type of over current device of the breaker. The thermal element (heat) is responsible for opening the breaker under an over current (long time) condition. The magnetic part is responsible for opening the breaker in a short circuit (instantaneous) condition.

Our engineering and technical sales staff at MIDWEST gets really excited when the phone rings in anticipation of a breaker question. Our expert staff has many years of experience. They are very happy to help you solve your breaker problem.

For the complete line of Cutler Hammer circuit breakers, give us a call or visit our web site at www.swgr.com. We have a huge inventory of used breakers in stock and ready to go. While you have our representative on the line, ask about our other electrical products we handle.

MIDWEST has been in the beakers service, sales, and testing business since 1977, the same year the Yankees won the World Series pennant for the 21st time. There is no connection between the two events that we are aware of.

MIDWEST maintains a huge inventory of breakers in stock. Whether you are looking for a new, used, or reconditioned breaker, we would be happy to help you find it.
